Alright, we got thru the major events that have molded us to more of who we are. That brings us to the 2025 – 2026 school year. D’s senior year of high school. Things were going pretty well and one Friday morning while I was getting things ready at the bar; I fell and ended up in the e.r. for my ankle. I was given a boot and told to stay off of it. Then we were watching D’s football game on the next week Friday night and what does he do? Hurts his ankle as well on the same side, the left. He ended up needing surgery which ruined the rest of football season and then part of the basketball season. Christmas of 2025 came and went and life was good. I was able to take a little back burner at work but still be there for the busy days. The weather was cold in northern WI like January is.
The temperature on that Monday was too cold. They called off school for T so I decided to spend the day home with him. While we thought it would be a normal day, it was the most horrifying day I have ever experienced.
T and I enjoyed our morning. I made him waffles from the new waffle maker we had gotten. We were hanging out and had dad bring lunch home from the bar. I was headed in the bedroom to take a nap. In walks Tristin, holding his head and crying from having a horrible headache. So I got him in the bed and ran to grab some tylenol hoping we could both just nap. The tylenol was getting stuck in his throat so we chased it down with some water but then the vomitting started. He tried to get up to use the toilet to vomit but couldn’t stand. I got him to the ground and ran to grab my husband. By the time we got back, he was barely responsive. I was on the phone with 911 and my husband kept trying to get him to wake up. The ambulance took forever in terms of our time line but really it didn’t.
The police got there first, then a first responder and then the ambulance. We got Tristin loaded up and I rode to the hospital with the ambulance. We were met by the doctor right at the door. I tried to stay in the room with him but they were doing so many things the nurse took me to a side room. Hubby was shortly behind us. We had no idea what they were doing or what was going on. We called D out of school and to get to us as soon as possible. Once D got there, the flight for life team was ready to go. I had a quick chat with a neurosurgeon at the hospital he was going to and then we left. We rushed…..the hospital T was going to was 2 hours away from us! All we knew was he had to have brain surgery the moment he was off the helicopter and we needed to get to him as soon as possible.
